Fly fishing on the rivers – hatches, hatches and more hatches!

The fly fishing on our Tasmanian rivers is really cranking along. Fat fish are the rewards of a record wet spring, and the mayfly are out, the willow grubs are falling, and baby hoppers are getting twitchy. The next few weeks are going to be brilliant! Here's a nearly 2lb trout on its way to the net, caught after three fly changes by Simone Hackett. It was a great piece of sight fishing!

Fly fishing Tasmania – St Patricks River

A ripper rainforest stretch, St Patricks River Tasmania.

Tasmanian fly fishing hatch chart – December 5th, 2013

The hatch chart is back in action for this season...mayfly are on the rivers and lakes 🙂

Fly fishing Tasmania – the past fortnight

In between rain storms over the past fortnight, we've been having some great polaroiding in the Western Lakes, and even better fishing on a few select stretches of rivers. The mayfly nymphs are on the move on the rivers, whilst stick caddis, stonefly and gum beetles were on the lakes. With low winds and warm weather here to stay this week, things are going to be brilliant!

Patagonia Stormfront Pack – Used and Abused gear review by Greg French

Aussie fly fishing author, Greg French, with his favourite Patagonia Stormfront backpack In superfast streams, like those commonly found in New Zealand (as well as Europe, Asia and the Americas,) knee deep currents can sweep you off your feet in a trice. Yet bold wading is often essential, either for effective casting or in order to gain access to the far bank. I’ve never pretended to be a natural when it comes to stream crossings,...

Sunburn and 20% off selected Patagonia fly fishing gear

Sunburn... It's hard to be stealthy when a sunburn blister bursts to life on a bonefish flat. Or zinc cream runs down your eyes. Or when your skin peels like a cheap veneer. That's why we have the new Patagonia Tropic Comfy Hoody and Flats Pants in stock! Whack the sun hoody on, cover your noggin' with a cap and UV Buff or sun mask, and focus on the fishing. Less exposed skin = more fish. Fully hooded, and fully buffed. Chasing some discount...

Fly fishing Tasmania – wild waters

One of my favourite photos. The location is deep in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, and features wild rainbows, and an old bush hut. 10/10 on the awesome scale. Deep in the Tasmanian wilderness, searching the flats for wild rainbows.

Secret creek – Tasmania

We've just discovered a new dry fly paradise - East Slope Creek. Trout, crayfish and platypus were all present and accounted for. We'll be back next week for another sightfish in this micro spring creek.

Tasmanian fly fishing report – the mayfly are on…finally!

With 49 days of rain since August 1, the fishing in Tasmania has been tough to say the least. But with three warm consecutive days, the fishing has come alive! Trout have been nymphing on the freestone rivers, black and red spinners are falling on Brumbys, and there's been loads of cruisers in the Nineteen Lagoons. Our Black and red spinner variants, Scruffy's and Woolly Caddis have been the go-to flies (check them out at our FlyShop). Mid next week looks like it should see more idealic spring conditions,...

Stu Tripney flies now available!

We are excited to have received our first shipment of Stu Tripney's awesome flies. These famous patterns are super-high quality (like our own 1864 patterns), custom tied, and are deadly on the trout. They are available here http://flyshop1864.com.au/shop/stu-tripney-flies/ Favourite patterns include the willow grub, which proved to be deadly on the Mersey River last year.

RiverFly Wilderness Huts – 2013 Tasmanian Tourism Awards finalist!

Simone and I are very excited today to learn that RiverFly Wilderness Huts have just been nominated as a finalist in the 2013 Tasmanian Tourism Awards! After years of planning, and our epic winter of building, it's absolutely awesome to achieve such a nomination, and to be the first fly fishing business to be nominated for the state-based awards. Sincere thanks goes out to all the unofficial builders and sherpas, we couldn't have done it with out you: Greg French, Frances Latham,...

Wild trout & shin deep water…

Just another reason for fly fishing in Tasmania: wild brown trout in shin-deep water. This one fell to one of our 1864 Redhead Fur Flies. Lucas Roach with a ripper trout yesterday.

Sydney Harbour Fly Fishing – Awesome.

With a week to go before our season kicks off in Tassie, we headed to Sydney to chase some salmon in the harbour. We hooked up with Justin Duggan of Sydney Fly Fishing Tours. The day was awesome, great weather, good company, lots of salmon and beautiful surrounds. Nothing short of fun! Highly recommend fishing with Justin. www.sydneyflyfishing.com.au

Fly fishing Tasmania – Hatch chart Sept 20 2013

Brumbys Creek - Levels are up and down, but the trout are starting to move. Weed growth has developed over winter, which is great for this season. Stoneflies have started to hatch. Four Springs - Frogs have been spawning for the past fortnight, and damsel nymphs are moving. Lake Huntsman - Clear, but hard work. St Patricks - Has been running high and clear, but cold temps have kept the fish down. North and South Esk - Flooding. A few black...
