Fly fishing Tasmania – Hatch chart Sept 20 2013
Brumbys Creek - Levels are up and down, but the trout are starting to move. Weed growth has developed over winter, which is great for this season. Stoneflies have started to hatch. Four Springs - Frogs have been spawning for the past fortnight, and damsel nymphs are moving. Lake Huntsman - Clear, but hard work. St Patricks - Has been running high and clear, but cold temps have kept the fish down. North and South Esk - Flooding. A few black...
Greg ‘Hynsie’ Hynes 1970-2013
One of our dearest friends, and RiverFly guide Greg Hynes passed away peacefully on Sunday 15th September. He was generous, sincere, thoughtful, and a very skilful fly fisher and tyer. If there is one thing that he would have liked to tell his fellow fly fishers, it’s to make sure that you look after yourself, your family and your mates – youth is no defence. It was a pleasure to know such a wonderful person. See you on a river...

Christmas Island fly fishing gear rundown
Christmas Island Fly Fishing Gear Any of you who follow our RiverFly Tasmania blog would know that I've recently returned from a great trip to Christmas Island, chasing bonefish. Rods and reels for bonefish Patagonia Sun Hoody, UV Buff, Orvis Helios 2, Orvis...
Sea trout camp – October 2013, only one spot left
With only eight weeks or so to go, I'm getting really excited about our sea trout campout. Departing in late October 2013, we are basing ourselves in one of the least explored sea trout fisheries in Tasmania, for the three day, two night trip. Mixing rafting with wading, we'll be following the whitebait runs up and down the river, sight-fishing to the larger than average trout that prey on them. If this sounds like a great adventure, then send us an...
Kiritimati (Christmas Island) bonefishing report
4lb bone, caught backcountry. Daniel Hackett During early June, myself and a group of Tasmanian fly fishers headed off for the famed saltwater destination, Kiritimati aka Christmas Island. Worth noting is that this is not the Australian Christmas island; this Christmas Island was another one of Captain Cook's innovatively named pacific islands, located 3000km's or so south of Hawaii. With flights only landing once a week, anglers have about 6 1/2 days of fly fishing on...
Christmas Island bonefish
I've just arrived back from Christmas Island (Kiritimati), and thought I'd post a quick teaser. I'll post a short slideshow on this blog later in the week, along with a rundown of the best flies and gear over on our RiverFly blog. Man these fish were strong, breaking 16lb fluoro with ease... Kiritimati Bonefish - Daniel Hackett www.riverfly.com.au It was bloody awesome fun, and I've got the saltwater bug. Trout in summer, bones in winter!

The frogs are moving…
I was lucky enough to be out in the Western Lakes yesterday, checking on our wilderness huts. It was great to hear frogs out-and-about, on the move six weeks earlier than last season. This has to be a good sign for early season 2013!
