Patagonia Rio Gallegos Waders – ‘Used and Abused’ review

Gavin Hicks on his favourite Mersey River Patagonia Rio Gallegos Waders review by Gavin Hicks It was a sad day, but the time had finally come. My old favourite breathable waders were on their last legs and I needed a new pair fast. So the logical thing to do these days would be to jump on the internet and order a pair of big name waders straight from the USA, right? Wrong. I did some initial...

Hookup on the Lost River – trout fishing Tasmania, May 2013

Fly fishing the lost river. We've swapped upstream dry fly for down-and-across wet fly this month. The result has been some fun fishing on seasonal rivers...I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Patagonia Stealth Chest Pack – ‘Used and Abused review’

Patagonia Stealth Chest Pack review by Greg Hynes With the range of chest packs on the market today you could easily find yourself spending hours dwelling over the features of one brand vs. another. What most of us are looking to find is a tough and durable pack, able to swallow enough gear for a day without being bulky and cumbersome, and one that you can forget you are wearing. After a season of guiding and personal use, I can honestly...

Used and Abused Gear Reviews: Orvis Hydros Flylines

Hydros Trout flyline taper The Orvis Hydros Trout flylines have been out for just over a year now, so we’ve had plenty of time to test them. In fact, I have one that has seen about 120 days or so, and is still going strong. Tasmania is our main testing ground, complete with the winds of the Roaring-Forties, coupled with smooth waters and finicky brown trout. This can be a tough combination to cater for: the...

FlyShop 1864 Tasmanian Hatch Chart – March 23, 2013 UPDATED 28/3

Update 28/3/2013: The South Esk upstream of the Macquarie is running high and clear, and is at a great level for hoppers and beatids. The Meander is running high, and a bit murky. The lower Mac and Brumbys are still murky, and worth avoiding at the moment. The Mersey is fishing well.   Here's the latest word:

Fly fishing Tasmania – it’s autumn mayfly time

As this week's rain breaks one of the driest and hottest March spells on record, we are looking forward to the onset of some great mayfly fishing. In  between rainstorms last week we experienced our first solid baetid hatch of the season. Size #18 slate-grey duns trickled out of the riffles, and lined up in the runs, where trout were eager to take our F-Flies and Iron Blue Duns. See you on the water! Simone Hackett...

There are some great hopper feeders to be had on Tasmania's meadow streams currently, providing you've got stable weather. This was just one of six wild browns for the day, all on the Mini-WMD Hopper. Head for the South Esk, Lower Macquarie, Brumbys or Meander.
