Drift fishing a remote Tasmanian river, somewhere…

We recently took the time out to raft-fish one of the most remote river valleys in Tasmania. We found some of the largest trees in Tasmania, along with giant freshwater crays and hundreds of eager trout. The end of the trip saw us back around the midlands, fishing to some great hopper feeders, which are now in full-swing.

FlyShop 1864 Hatch Chart – Feb 16, 2013

Here's the latest Hatch Chart from FlyShop 1864:   FlyShop 1864 Hatch Chart 16 Feb

Fat Macquarie River brown trout

A fat 1.5lber from the Lower Mac. The fishing has been hard on the Lower Mac, with few fish showing, but the quality of the fish has made up for it. We are expecting the hoppers to come on quite well in the next week, after the current hot and dry spell. The Meander already features great hopper fishing, along with hoppers on the lower sections of Brumbys.

Putting the wood to a Western Lakes brownie

RiverFly Wilderness Huts angler, Brian, putting the wood to a wild Western Lake brown trout. Nice work!

Wild Tasmanian trout

RiverFly Tasmania guide Greg Hynes (wearing the Patagonia Chest-Sling Pack) nets a nearly three-pound trout in the South Esk, Tasmania, caught on a CDC F-Fly.

We’ve launched raft number two!

We successfully launched our second raft over the new year, enabling us to raft and sight-fish with groups of four anglers on Brumbys Creek, the Macquarie, South Esk, and wilderness rivers. Designed to draft only 2 inches of water, and light enough to carry, we can drift in places that no other boats can.

Western Lakes wilderness trout – Tasmania

In between rafting trips on Brumbys Creek, we've been out at RiverFly Wilderness Huts over the past fortnight, sight-fishing to black spinner mayfly feeders along the crystal-clear lake edges. Here's a wild brown trout, caught by David on one of our Pheasant Tail Black Spinners, deep in the Tasmanian World Heritage Area. These wilderness trips have also proved to be the perfect testing ground for my Patagonia Chest Pack, River Salt Jacket, RockGrip Wading Boots and Rio Gallegos Waders. All have passed...

The red spinners are out at Brumbys Creek!

Jon with a chunky 3 1/4 lb wild brown trout from Brumbys Creek. This fish, and seven others for the day, fell to a well presented Pheasant Tail Red Spinner . The fish at Brumbys this season have been the fattest and healthiest I have seen in ten years. With high and clear water already running, the season has just got off to a great start!
