With only eight days to go till the new season, we are already planning for our opening weekend. Customers often ask where we’ll be heading. For me, it will be one of a few favourite granite creeks, which will be flowing clear, and where sight-fishing with nymphs will be the go. Some of these creeks are headwater feeders of the South Esk, North Esk, Forester, Ringarooma and St Patricks rivers. Other creeks are so secret that we don’t even name the location or catchment, and indeed it’s the adventure of tracing maps and finding some of these gems that is half the reward of early season fly fishing for many. Favourite flies? That’s easy; a big foam beetle or an earthworm fly.
