Fly fishing tasmania – opening week 2012

Craig with an early season trout from Brumbys Creek. The past week and a half since the Tasmanian fishing season opening day has seen days of snow alternating with perfect blue sky days. We've fished Brumbys Creek, the Meander River, and Lake Hunstman over the past four days, with fish each day (including on Sunday, when Simone outfished us all!). Cold water temperatures have meant that the fish are harder to temp, and tailers have been...

July fly tying competition winners, August competition now open

Here are the winning and favourite entries from July's fly tying competition. The theme was 'midges', with Phil from Hobart taking out the $50 first prize voucher, with his innovative midge emerger. The impressive part of Phil's tie was the way that old stocking was stuffed with seal's fur, which in turn was then teased out with Velcro, to produce an almost unsinkable, highly-visible post. Second place went to Alan from Launceston, with his tidy 'Fore and Aft' Griffiths Gnats....

Australian Fly Fishing Museum – Tasmania

We have some great news to announce: the 4 May 2013 will see the opening of the Australian Fly Fishing Museum, at Clarendon Estate, Nile, Tasmania. Clarendon House (owned and operated by the National Trust) is situated on the banks of the South Esk River, opposite Symmons Plains. Symonns Plains of course was the home of James Youl, the man responsible for bringing brown trout to Tasmania, so the location for the museum couldn't be better! ...

Orvis announces new Helios Rod – The Helios 2 (H2)

Awesome news from Orvis, with the announcement that a new Helios rod is imminent. The current 9 foot 5 weight Helios is already my favourite rod. The current Helios is a great allround taper, which is  slow enough for spinner sippers on Brumbys Creek, but fast enough for long shots into a Western Lakes headwind. It also perfectly matches a true five weight line, including my favourite Orvis Hydros 3D textured line. With this in mind, I'm pretty excited about...

We are excited to have received our first samples of  Patagonia Waders, packs, and wading boots, fresh off the plane from HQ in California. Included in this first batch are the award winning Rio Gallegos Waders, awesome Gunnison wading pants, and their range of chestpacks, slingpacks and backpacks. Frosty mountain days…

An icy Little Pine Lagoon

I headed up to the Huts yesterday, just for a look around, and to finish a few odd jobs. Unexpectedly, I couldn't even get within 20 kilometres due to snow and ice. Even Little Pine Lagoon was coated in a layer of slush, pot-holed by shivering swans...

Fly Fishing Tasmania – end of season mini-report

Mayflies, midgers and tailers are all current highlights as the brown trout season comes to an end. The South Esk continues to have excellent black spinner falls and baetid dun hatches, with a few hours of rising trout being found most days (excepting frontal-weather system days). The Lower Meander still has the odd hopper feeder, and occassional baetid sippers, and the Lower Macquarie still features sporadic afternoon red spinner falls, and foam-line sippers. Up in the highlands and we have...
