Meander River Angler Access map

With the co-operation of local landowners, the Meander Council, and local resource management groups, the Inland Fisheries Service has been beevoring away to open new angler access points on the Meander River. The Meander is one of the best lowland mayfly rivers from Deloraine to Hadspen, whilst it represents one of our best fastwater streams from Deloraine to Huntsman. To help anglers wanting to access this great resource we've created a free Google Fly Fishing Map which can be viewed here. The map shows...

Meander River Angler Access

Just a quick news flash - As I quickly drove over the Meander River at Knights Bridge yesterday, two freshly installed Angler Access Points were noted. Well done to the IFS and AAT, and I look forward to the formal opening and details of the Meander Angler Access project. With environmental flows all year round, the Meander is back as one of our greatest fly fishing rivers, and improved access is great for recreational anglers and guides alike. Once the...

Fly fishing a stones throw from Launceston

The fly fishing around Launceston has begun to build up for the season. By October 17th, big mayfly hatches had started on the South Esk, and massive beetle falls were occuring during the warmest periods of the month at Brumbys Creek. The upper North Esk and St Pats have had their water levels moderate, and the early morning Meander River smut fishing have begun. It's a great time to be out, fishing with mates. Flies of the moment: Fastwater Dun and Ostrich Herl...

It’s mayfly time..

The mayfly season has started with small hatches on the Macquarie, South Esk and North Esk rivers... Changeable spring days have been stiffling the hatches, but the red spinners are showing, along with beatids, during warmer muggy days. Flying ants have also been on the menu, along with lots of mayfly and stonefly nymphs. Thirty percent of fish are now coming to dry flies. In the highlands, Arthurs Lake is fishing well for tailing trout as water floods into new tree...

Tasmanian Fly Fishing report September 2010

Flood fishing... Tasmania hasn’t escaped the big wet of the past month, with many lakes and rivers overflowing at present. The rain has been welcomed as we enter our second wet spring in a row, and the Tasmanian fishery hasn’t looked this healthy in more than a decade. Little Pine Lagoon was one of the first lakes to overflow late in August, offering two days of unbelievable flood-fishing. Spiders were one of the main food items, an event that was mirrored on...

Flood Feeders

Lake Huntsman flood feeder

After another wet week in Tassie, the flood fishing is beginning to peak. The past couple of days were spent guiding on flooding lakes and rivers, where trout foraged in newly flooded margins, predominantly in search of drowned earthworms. Mid-mornings were the best time for catches, but as the water temperatures rise, the early morning action should also increase.  Waters to watch over the next three weeks will include the middle and upper...

The big wet – Tassie river levels

A rundown in the aftermath of yesterday's big wet: Mt Wellington in the south, and Gray in the East both received around 200mm of rainfall in total. The South Esk River is in major flood—to put this in perspective, good flood fishing occurs as the river reaches about 2.4-3.0 metres; the river is expected to exceed 8.6 metres today! The Macquarie River breaches the banks around Ross at 0.40 metres, but has far exceeded this and is now running at 1.00 metre...

RiverFly Tasmania season opening day 2010/2011 newsletter

Wild fisheries on the rise…  Over the past couple of seasons, mates and I have been exploring fisheries that barely see a person. We’ve explored the Mersey and Meander rivers from top to bottom, waded up and down the southern rivers and rainforests, and explored even more of the Western Lakes area. All of these fisheries are bucking the Australia-wide trend of disastrous impacts from drought and climate change, and have become a shining light in the future of the...
