New book on Tasmanian high country hut builders and pioneers

Written by Simon Cubit and Nic Haygarth, Mountain Men is a collection of biographies of ten 'mountain men' who lived or worked in the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair high country from the 1870s to the 1990s.  These men are Dan Griffin, William Aylett, Gustav Weindorfer (Cradle Mountain), Paddy Hartnett, Bert Nichols, Ron Smith, Lionel Connell, Dick Reed, Ray Miles and Basil Steers. Chances are that if you've fished the Mersey Valley, Chudleigh Lakes, walked the Overland Track or Walls...

Only eight days to go till the new Tasmanian fly fishing season

With only eight days to go till the new season, we are already planning for our opening weekend. Customers often ask where we'll be heading. For me, it will be one of a few favourite granite creeks, which will be flowing clear, and where sight-fishing with nymphs will be the go. Some of these creeks are headwater feeders of the South Esk, North Esk, Forester, Ringarooma and St Patricks rivers. Other creeks are so secret that we don't even name the location...

C and F Designs Fly Boxes and Accessories now available

We are stoked to have received our fist shipment of Japanese C and F DESIGN fly boxes. This is the company that invented the slit-foam fly boxes, with a range that now includes an array of saltwater boxes, waterproof boxes, and my favourite ultralight boxes (full sized boxes from 100 grams!). C and F have also begun producing some awesome chest-pack style systems, along with some great accessories from clippers through to double-zingers, net releases and magnetic fly keepers. These will...

New Sage for 2016 – Available at RiverFly 1864 from August 2015

New Sage for 2016 – Available at RiverFly 1864 from August 2015 Sage MOD – Best New Fly Rod EFFTEX 2015 I’m predicting that this taper will be the new go-to river rod for Australian anglers, and lovers of the classic SLT range. A high-performance moderate action rod, somewhere between the fast action ONE and the deep-loading CIRCA, this should be a cracking taper for hatch-driven fly fishing where a bit of extra power is needed from time to time. The MOD...

Why you don’t need another fast-action fly rod

FlyFest 2015, and why you don’t need another fast actioned fly rod… Our annual community fly fishing event is called FlyFest, and the weekend of events just wrapped again for another season. Put simply, FlyFest is a community event that our flyshop runs each year, to promote fly fishing through international guests, as a way of inspiring and saying thanks to our local customers. For an island that sits under ‘Down Under’, our Tasmanian fishing community is one of the most...

Fly fishing the Tasmania rivers

A great shot by RiverFly guide Peter Broomhall from the season just past. One of a dozen or more landed for the day, all on the dry. Rafting is one of our favourite ways to fly fishing the larger Tasmanian rivers!

New gear from Patagonia, Scott, Epic, Lamson and Kean Kanteen

New gear from Patagonia, Scott, Epic, Lamson and Kean Kanteen Since moving to our new larger location at 29 The Kingsway, Launceston, we’ve been very busy sourcing an even larger range of cool gear. New in stock from Patagonia is our favourite insulation layer, the breathable, stretchable, water-resitant Nano-Air. An awesome replacement for bulky fleece jackets, the Nano-Air is perfect for anybody that fishes, hikes or boats the high country. Looking for a bombproof jacket, built to last a lifetime?...

Overland Jack project

Overland Jack At RiverFly1864 we believe that it's important to do our bit for environmental and social causes. It’s one of the ways that we can give back to our customers, local community and the environment that play host to our business. One of our major projects this season has been supporting a cool young fella, 'Jack', and his family, in achieving their Overland Jack fundraiser goals (see below). (more…)

Fly fishing Tasmania – great autumn conditions

Another great autumn weekend on the Tasmanian rivers. RiverFly guide Peter Broomhall fished with Bec yesterday, who landed her first ever trout on the fly. Ripper work! Sippers are still steady, and un-weighted nymphs are fooling the harder fish. The St Pats, Mersey, Meander and South Esk are the best locals down low, whilst afternoon jassids had fish surface-feeding in the Nineteen Lagoons late last week. Couldn't ask for better autumn fishing.
